How to Choose the Perfect Family Photo Location in Phoenix?

If you're searching for the best family photo locations in Phoenix, you're in the right place. As a Phoenix family photographer, one of the questions my team and I get asked most is, "Where should we take our photos?"

When little ones are involved, the answer isn't always the prettiest location—it's the one that gives kids room to explore, play, and simply be themselves. Every child is different and we pride ourselves on reading the situation and your children to learn how to approach the session! The best family photos often happen when children aren't being asked to sit still and smile, but instead are laughing, running, collecting rocks, or holding mom and dad's hands.

Whether you're planning your first family session or updating your annual portraits, choosing the right location makes all the difference. Here are five of my top recommendations for family photos in Phoenix, AZ that are beautiful, kid-friendly, and perfect for capturing authenic moments.

1. Papago Park (Phoenix & Tempe)

If you're looking for that iconic Arizona desert feel without a long hike, Papago Park is hard to beat. The sandstone rocks, occasional ponds and wide-open trails create a timeless backdrop that's beautiful in every season. I have two specific spots my team and I prioritize 1) Near Hole in the Rock, and 2) A special lesser know spot that is especially photogenic 🤫

This location is especially great for young kids because:

  • Short, easy walking paths
  • Plenty of space to run around safely
  • Beautiful desert scenery without strenuous hiking
  • Gorgeous golden-hour light before sunset

It's one of my favorite spots for Arizona family photography, especially for families who want photos that truly FEEL like Phoenix.

2. Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch (Gilbert)

For families wanting more greenery, water, and variety, the Riparian Preserve is one of my favorite East Valley locations.

You'll find:

  • Shady walking paths
  • Peaceful lakes and wooden bridges
  • Tall grasses and native landscaping
  • Beautiful trees throughout the year
  • Plenty of wildlife, including ducks, turtles, and birds

Kids love exploring here, which makes it easy to capture genuine smiles and natural interactions instead of forced poses. It's an especially wonderful location for Phoenix toddler photography, giving little ones the freedom to wander while we document authentic moments together.

  • Beautiful golden-hour light throughout the year
